We toured Visited ESMA today. La Escuela de Mecanica de la Armada (Navy School of Mechanics) was a clandestine detention, torture, and exectution center run by the Argentine military governement in the 70’s and 80’s. Only 150 of the 5,000 prisoners taken here left alive. It is harrowing to know how involved the United States was in all of this. While I do not believe the US is an awful and horrible country and I am grateful that I am a citizen, I do believe that the best way to exercise my citizenship is to be aware of national transgressions and hold the US accountable. It is in this way that we can best move forward as a nation that seeks to protect and advocate for the civil and political liberties of all. Not just those who have been born within US borders.
